True North Granola
I recently had the chance to sample True North Granola at the SOWA Market in Boston and met Ingrid and Franklin. Both were so enthusiastic about how they make their product as well as all the different varieties they offer! What is unique or special about your products?
Our products are made in small batches, and we take special care to ensure that each product is fresh, crunchy, and made with consistent care. All ingredients are non GMO and include a combination of organic or all-natural. We use no chemicals or preservatives, and do not warehouse our products. We try to address a broad range of dietary/nutritional needs which are reflected in our regular products as well as, gluten-free, grain-free, vegan, nut-free products. They are shipped almost as quickly as they are baked. Our products are most often described as "not too sweet, super crunchy, and the best granola in the world."
How did you get started making granola and what led you to this business?
Ingrid was a middle school/high school teacher and principal for 44 years. Franklin was an elementary school teacher for 41 years. Nine years before Ingrid retired from education, she began this business as an opportunity to find balance in an intense educational career. The business is now in its 11th year and has been growing substantially each year. As retired educators, our main focus is to contribute to provide healthy eating for students. We donate money and funds to schools and educational events on a consistent and intentional basis.
How does the New England region influence your business and products?
Vermont pure maple syrup is a key ingredient in every product except our Muesli and Cookie Mix. We partner with Hidden Springs Maple in Vermont to ensure that all maple syrup is produced by Vermont sugar makers. We make our products in a licensed commercial facility in Brattleboro, VT which is owned by a local non-profit which has as its focus the support of small businesses. We follow a consistent procedure in baking every batch and take great care to prevent cross-contact among products (e.g. with nuts or no nuts; with gluten or no gluten). We pride ourselves on working to develop a strong local and regional brand.
What is your favorite way to eat True North Granola?
Granola is a versatile food. We eat it straight out of the bag as a snack, as a topping on other cereals, with mild or yogurt, and use it as a topping on baked root vegetables or fruit crisps, to name just a few ways to eat granola. We also mix it in pancake, muffin or bread mixes. Our Nutty No Grainer products are also delicious on salads!
